The original purpose of the screen-saver was to protect the monitor's tube from phosphor burn where prolonged display of a static, high-contrast image would eventually be permanently visible. A good example is some older cash-machines where you can still see the "Insert your card" message even when you've inserted your card, tapped in your PIN and are now looking at your account.
In this age of new monitors with high quality tubes, the screen saver is no longer a necessity and it's use today is resigned to mere eye-candy and to stop people prying at your work while you are away from your computer.

With Windows, there is a good selection of screen savers, each has a different setup. Here are the settings for the 3D Maze screensaver. You can change the texture for each surface, and even use your own texture. |
If you are using the screen saver to protect your work from prying eyes, then it needs password protection. Only you can deactivate the screensaver by entering the password. The Wait setting is how long the computer has to be inactive before the screensaver starts.
